Jeanne Marie Barta, 75, of Gayville, SD, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, March 8, 2013. Visitations will begin at 10:00 AM, Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Opsahl Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, a Rosary will be said at 10:30 AM with the Memorial Service to begin at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Opsahl Kostel Funeral Chapel, with Rev. David Fulton officiating. Fellowship and lunch will follow the service at the funeral home.
Jeanne was born October 10, 1937 in Vermillion, SD to Buel and Myrtle (Kaeberle) Burton. She attended school in Meckling, SD and married William (Bill) Barta on October 29, 1954 at Ft. Lee, VA.
Jeanne worked for the Civil Service in Ethiopia, East Africa and Arlington, VA. She was a medical secretary at the Lettrman San Francisco Army Hospital and a secretary for Pridmore Construction Company in Napa, CA until her retirement to South Dakota in 2004. She loved coming home to her roots in South Dakota, her loving family, and reconnecting with many good friends. She shared her time as a 3rd grade senior buddy volunteer at Gayville Elementary School. Jeanne truly enjoyed her two cats, Dulce & Ashes, along with feeding and watching the many birds and squirrels that gathered in her yard to eat. Jeanne's love of nature was evident through her extensive frog collection and fresh flowers always present in her home.
She is survived by husband Bill Barta of Gayville, SD; sisters, Norma Prough of Palm Desert, CA and Diane Finks of Arlington, VA and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Carol Hubert (Vermillion, SD), and brothers, LeRoy Burton (Maitland, MO) and Harold (Hap) Burton (Vermillion, SD).
