Walter was born on November 26, 1922 on the Herrboldt family farm east of Menno to Emil and Emma (Ulmer) Herrboldt. He was baptized and confirmed at the former Ebenezer Reformed Church of rural Menno. He attended the Handel School near his childhood home. After the Ebenezer Reformed Church congregation merged with Salem Reformed, he served as a deacon and participated in various building and maintenance projects.
On August 25, 1944 he married Idella Quast of Menno and began farming with his father-in-law, Christ Quast. In 1948 Walter and Idella moved to the Quast Homestead Farm where they lived until moving to Menno in 1982. At the age of twenty-five Walter was diagnosed with bone cancer of the mouth and underwent surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He survived the cancer and was able to continue his beloved occupation of farming. In later years, he partnered with his son Lee, who eventually took over operation of the family farm.
Walter took pleasure in his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and in attending community sporting events. He also enjoyed several trips with Idella seeing and experiencing many different parts of the country.
Preceding Walter in death were his parents, Emil (1965) and Emma (1961); brothers Albert (Esther) and Clarence Herrboldt; brothers-in-law, Gilbert (Gert), Ray Quast, and Oliver Chance.
In addition to his wife Idella, surviving family members are his son, Lee and wife Dianne, their children Jason (Angela) of Sioux Falls with sons Isaac, Everett and Westin; Kimberly (Jeremy) Berger of Columbia, MO and their son Mason; and Brad (Krissy) of Omaha, NE; his daughter Nancy and husband Greg Huffman of Warren, RI and their sons Brian of Providence RI, and Mike with son Michael of Pawtucket, RI. Also surviving are Walter's brother Clifford (Lavonne) Herrboldt and his sister Inez (Elmer) Winckler of Menno; sisters-in-law Irene Quast and Verlina Herrboldt, all of Menno along with many nieces and nephews and their families.
