Vivian E. Solay, age 89, of Yankton and formerly of Parkston passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parkston, SD at approximately 1:45 PM. Visitations will begin at 6 PM, Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Vivian was born to Ellis and Lillas (Adkins) Thompson on January 6, 1925 on a farm near Tripp, SD. Vivian married Leonard Hauser on September 14, 1942. They had two sons, Gary and Kurt. Vivian spent many hours helping on their family farm near Milltown. The family moved into town (Parkston) and after Leonard passed on January 13, 1969, Vivian worked as a teacher's aide in a country school. Later she worked at Ed's Toggery until she married Alphonse (Al) Solay on October 5, 1974. Vivian worked very hard and loved to take care of her family and home. Al and Vivian enjoyed card playing with friends and family, attending dances, going on family trips, and traveling with their variety of RV's over the years. She enjoyed entertaining friends and family and enjoyed seeing her grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Al Solay of Yankton; sons: Gary (Sandra) Hauser of Lafayette, Indiana, and Kurt (Carrie) Hauser of Yankton; sisters: Dorothea Peterson of Springfield, SD and Nellie (Curt) Green of Scotland, SD; brothers: Larry (Kay) Thompson of Freemont, NE and James (Judy) Thompson of Parkston, SD; sisters-in law, Alice Thompson of Hastings, NE and Lena Hauser of Parkston, SD; stepson, Kurt Solay of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Jeff (Nikki) Hauser of Pine Village, IN, and Nick and Katie Hauser of Yankton, SD; great-grandchildren: Cole and Klay Hauser of Pine Village, IN; step-grandchildren, Morgan and Bennett Solay of Rapid City, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Lillas Thompson, step-mother, Ella Thompson, brothers, Warren and Dale Thompson, sister, Viola Thompson, husband, Leonard Hauser, stepson, Dennis Solay, grandson, Jimmy Hauser, sisters in-law, Helen Thompson and Eleanor Thompson, and brothers in-law: Ralph Dunmire, Marvin Peterson, and Ray Hoffman.
