Charles E. Shelburg, age 81, of Yankton, SD passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home, Irene, SD. Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Mission Hill Cemetery at approximately 3:15 PM with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 Honor Guard, Yankton and the SDARNG Honor Guard, Sioux Falls. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Chuck was born December 20, 1932 in Des Moines, IA to Earl and Lela Fern (Doughtery) Shelburg. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard until the family moved to Tillamook, OR. The family lived there for a year and upon returning to Des Moines, IA, he joined the Marine Corp where he was stationed in Korea and Japan. Upon discharge, he moved back to Iowa and married Mary Kay Ross in 1956. To this union, two daughters, Amber and Wendy, were born. Chuck and Mary Kay moved to Yankton where he continued to work in the upholstering business. When he and Mary Kay divorced, he traveled around the country working construction, building packing plants and rendering plants. He met Carol Smith and they were married a short time later. Carol had a daughter, Nancy. Chuck adopted her and she joined his family as the third daughter. They bought a home in Mission Hill and sometime later, they bought a basement home in Mission Hill. They built their home together and opened an upholstery shop on East 8th Street in Yankton. When he and Carol divorced, he traveled and worked in construction. When he got injured on a job in Texas, he came back to Yankton and opened another upholstery shop. He also started driving a school bus, a job he really enjoyed. Chuck was very talented and enjoyed working with his hands and building things. He is survived by his daughters, Amber (Mike) Funaro and Wendy Aldrich, both of Des Moines, IA; brothers, John of Yankton, SD and James of Houston, TX; sister, Marlene of Yankton, SD; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Oscar and Emma Shelburg and David and Harriet Dougherty, first wife, Mary Kay, and daughter, Nancy Mooney.
