M. Milo Sheldon, age 74 of Yankton, SD passed away Monday, March 09, 2015 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital , Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, March 13, 2015 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Yankton, SD with Rev. Molly Carlson officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date. Visitations will be 5 to 7 PM, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, and then one hour prior to the service at the church.
Milo was born on December 25, 1940, the oldest son of Perrie and Lucille (Perkins) Sheldon, in Monticello, MN. He graduated from the Fergus Falls Senior High School, Fergus Falls, MN in 1958. He attended Yankton College graduating in 1962. In 1965, he graduated from United Theological Seminary in New Brighton, Minnesota and was ordained by the United Church of Christ in June of that year.
His first parish was Tri-Church Parish-Ree Heights, Cedar and Highmore. From there, he went to the Alcester-Hudson Parish and then to the Mobridge UCC. The only parish he served, not in South Dakota, was in Hartley, IA. He retired from the Mitchell United Church of Christ in 2005.
Milo was an avid automotive industry enthusiast and could tell you the new features of every model when it came out. This interest turned into an amazing collection of one twenty fifth scale models, which he shared with the public in his Model Car Museum in Mitchell, South Dakota for three years.
Milo loved his grandchildren and enjoyed playing games with them in the Sister James Care Center. He was a member of the SDUCC Board of Directors, Lions, a Boy Scout Master, attending the sporting events of his sons, bowling and playing golf.
On June 21, 1963, he married his high school classmate, Kathryn (Kathy) Vollbrecht in Fergus Falls, MN and to this union, three sons were born.
Milo is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Kathryn (Vollbrecht) Sheldon of Yankton, SD; sons: Mark (Colette) of Bismarck, ND, Kyle (Tanya) of Meridian, ID, and Todd (Tara) of Yankton, SD; five grandsons and four granddaughters: Evan and Carl of Fargo, ND, KyAnna, Savanna and Alayna, all of Meridian, ID, Joshua, Matthew, Isabelle, and Isaac, all of Yankton, SD; his parents, Perrie and Lucille Sheldon of Fergus Falls, MN; three brothers: Loren Sheldon of Chatanooga, TN, Keith (MaryAnne) Sheldon of Divide, CO and Jay (Tammy) Sheldon of Elbow Lake, MN and one sister, Judy Sheldon of Woodbury, MN; two brothers-in-law, Paul Vollbrecht of Cleveland, GA, Tony Vollbrecht of Fergus Falls, MN; two sisters-in-law, Jane Vollbrecht of Cleveland, GA and Esther Vollbrecht of Morehead, MN.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Evan and Minnie Sheldon, and Frank and Grace Perkins.
