Roy was born at home in rural Utica on March 15, 1924 to Albert and Celia (Vollmer) Braunesreither. He was baptized and confirmed at Martinus Lutheran Church in rural Utica where he was a lifetime member and served as elder and other offices for many years. He attended grade school at Huber #44 in rural Utica. Roy joined the United States Army in 1946 when his brother, Bud, came home from the service. He served as a MP in Tokyo, Japan where he met up with his other brother, Virgil during the occupation. When he got back to the states, he used his GI Bill, along with some of his buddies, to learn to fly a plane. He gave his future wife, Gladys, a flight in a piper cub airplane. He married Gladys Jerke on June 17, 1949 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, SD and they were married for 65 years. While they were married, Roy farmed adjacent to the land he grew up on and next to his grandfather's which was homesteaded in 1877. After he retired in 1986, he came out to the farm every day to help his sons farm. Just a month ago, we couldn't keep him from crawling into the grain bin to help shovel corn. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and visiting with his friends. He attended and supported the baseball games in Lesterville.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Braunesreither of Yankton, SD; children: Alan Braunesreither (Cec Nielsen) of Yankton, SD, Lora (Gerald) Fejfar of Sioux Falls, SD, Dean (Dawn) Braunesreither of Mission Hill, SD and Kent (Linda) Braunesreither of Sioux Falls, SD; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Dianne) Braunesreither of St. Charles, MO; sisters-in-law, Gladys Braunesreither of Yankton, SD and Charlotte Mayhew of Wichita, KS; brother-in-law, Carrol (Pearl) Jerke of Yankton, SD; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Bud (Wilbert) and Virgil, sisters, Lorraine (Melvin) Wudel and Alma Campbell.
Roy will be greatly missed by family and friends. You always knew when Roy was around because of his infectious laugh.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Martinus Lutheran Church, 43804 300th Street, Utica, SD 57067.
