Obituary of Darlene Pederson
Darlene E. Pederson, age 93 of Yankton, SD passed away Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, SD with Rev. Kwen Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in the Faith United (Zion) Cemetery, rural Volin, SD. Visitations will be 1 hour prior to the service at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Onsite Crematory, Yankton, SD. Darlene E. Pederson was born February 18, 1930, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD to Henry and Alma (Engen) Hoxeng. She grew up on a farm northwest of Volin, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Volin. Darlene attended country school and graduated from Volin High School.
On September 2, 1949, Darlene married the love of her life, Virgil M. Pederson at the Zion Lutheran Church. They were married 63 years until Virgil passed away on February 29, 2012, at the age of 85.
Darlene was very active in church, teaching Sunday school, belonging to Mary’s Circle at Trinity Lutheran for many years, helping with funeral luncheons, and quilting and sewing the Banquet. She enjoyed the out of doors doing yard work and daily walks, weather permitting. Darlene loved to entertainment family and friends. She was a member of Sons of Norway and the VFW Auxillary.
Darlene was employed part time as secretary at Trinity Lutheran for a number of years and a housekeeper at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Darlene is preceded in death by her parents, brothers; LaVerne Donald Hoxeng and wife Norma (Johns), Warren Dale Hoxeng and wife Darlene (Sorensen); Herbert Allen Hoxeng; and sister, Janet (Hoxeng) DeBolt.
Darlene is survived by her daughter Debra (Jeff) Clow of Harrisburg, SD; son Daniel (Sandra) Pederson of Yankton, SD; two grandchildren; Ashley (Wayne) Dullerud of Meckling, SD and Josh (Heather) Pederson of Lincoln, NE; five great grandchildren; Charlie, Peyton, and Ava Pederson, Wayne Jr. and Cora Dullerud; and many nieces and nephews.
