Elenore was born January 10, 1926 to Henry and Edith (Holm) Evenson in rural Bon Homme County. She grew up and attended school in this rural area, graduating from Scotland High School, and then continued her education at Yankton College, receiving her teaching certificate. She started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, Wilson #54, in rural Utica. Elenore married Patrick J. Kappel, the love of her life, on May 19, 1947. Together they were blessed with and raised ten children. Her family was the core of her life and all revolved around them. Her love and devotion will always be cherished, and her humor and wit will not be forgotten. When the chance to travel arose, she jumped at the opportunity. For 13 years, she was donned with the title “best chopper” while working at Muggsy’s Sub Galley. She loved to bake, the game of chance, and playing bingo with all of her bingo buddies. She will be with us wherever we go, and today she will be lifted to a glorious reunion with her God and loved ones.
She is survived by her sister Eileen Morman, Yankton, brother Dale and sister-in-law Julie Evenson, Yankton, aunt Dagny Stevenson, Scotland; five sons: Michael, Yankton, Robert (Romaine), Sioux Falls, Gregory & Karen Korth, Crofton, NE, Larry (Kate), Omaha, NE, Jeffrey (Pam), Yankton; three daughters: Kathleen Boom & Mike Conlon, San Diego, CA, Pamela (John) Murray, Yankton, Mary Beth (Denny) Fokken, Yankton; 24 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Elenore was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick J. Kappel, her parents, Henry and Edith Evenson, a young brother, Gordon, two sons, Ernest and Thomas Kappel, and daughter-in-law Judy Kappel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Thomas and Ernest Kappel Scholarship Fund at Sacred Heart School, 509 Capital, Yankton, SD 57078.
