Karen Paintner, age 76 of Gayville, SD passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Larry Regynski officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitations will be Monday, January 9, 2017 beginning at 6 PM at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD with a 6:45 PM Rosary followed by a 7:00 PM Scripture service. Karen was born in Flint, Michigan to Albert and Catherine Comins in 1940. She went to high school in Flint, Michigan and graduated in 1958. She went on to become a registered nurse in Portland, Oregon. On November 22, 1969, Karen was united in marriage to Dale Paintner at St. Francis Church in Portland, Oregon. Karen’s biggest joy was spending time with her husband Dale cooking, shopping, and just being together. The two loved to camp and spent much of their time doing so. Karen also enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball, football and hockey, gardening, and making new acquaintances everywhere she went.
Karen is survived by her husband, Dale of Gayville, SD, daughter, Shannon Speicher of Ithica, NY, son, Tim Paintner (Cindy) of Dubuque, IA, and son, Brian Paintner (Anne) of Lafayette, IN. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Tony Speicher, Andrew, Paul and Megan Paintner, and Cecilia, Grace, Isaac, and Liam Paintner. In addition she is survived by her twin brother, Kevin Comins and brother, Rodney Comins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother Terence Comins, her in-laws, son-in-law, Paul Speicher and infant grandson, Benjamin Paintner.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital and Avera Heart Hospital for the care Karen received and the comfort given to the family.
