Obituary of Robert S. Moore

Bob was born October 27, 1927 in Yankton, SD to William and Helen (Stibral) Moore. He grew up and spent his entire life in the Yankton area. He married Lorraine Davis on June 21, 1948 and to that union, five children were born. On November 8, 1944 Bob enlisted in the United State Navy serving on board the USS General A. E. Anderson transport ship and served in all theaters during World War II. Upon his discharge from duty in 1946, he returned to Yankton and worked with his dad at Moore’s Wholesale, making and packaging Moore’s Potato Chips as well as roasting and packaging Moore’s Peanuts while at the same time, attending to route sales. In 1956, Bob purchased a used truck from his father and began his own business, Bob’s Candy Service and has continuously served Yankton and the surrounding area since that time. He was active in the business and decision making until the time of his death. Bob was an active member of the “South Dakota Association of Tobacco and Candy Distributors”, serving many years on the associations board of directors and as president of the association in 1976 and again in 1992. In his business profession, he was also a member of the “Gopher Candy Club” and the “National Candy Wholesalers Association”. In 1973 Bob was awarded the “Candy Merchandiser of the Year” plaque jointly by the “NCWA and the SDCTWA”. Bob was a life member of VFW Post #791 of Yankton, SD and a 53 year member of the American Legion Post 237 of Gayville, SD. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton and served as usher and on the stewardship committee. Bob was an active person who loved the outdoors, gardening and farming. He will be remembered for his strong work ethics, quiet yet profound love of God and family. He will be deeply missed. Bob’s real dream in life was to be a farmer as noted on his Navy discharge. That ambition is attributed to the numerous farmers he worked for before enlisting in the Navy during WW II. Although he was not able to totally realize that dream, he was able to purchase a farm in the mid 70’s and managed its operations and worked weekends on the farm until 2015. Bob is survived by his 5 children: Garry (Connie) Moore of Yankton, SD, Jean Fitch of Yankton, SD, Penny (Elgin) Hofer of Sioux City, IA, Vickie (Tim) Connors of Sioux Falls, SD and Shelly (Jim) DeBoer of Yankton, SD; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; one sister, Kay Masonbrink; sister-in-law, Gert Moore and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; his parents, William and Helen Moore; his step-mother, Alice Moore; twin brothers, Tim and Bill Moore and sons-in-law, Jim Doering and Ron Fitch.
