Obituary of Michael Hemmingson
Michael L. Hemmingson, age 67 of Wakonda, SD passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Memorial service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, November 18 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene, SD with Rev. Mark Ostrem officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery in Wakonda at a later date. Online condolences may be sent at www.opsahl-kostelfuneralhome.com. Michael Lee Hemmingson, 67, of Centerville, South Dakota passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.
Michael was born on October 3, 1956, in Vermillion, South Dakota to Richard and Audrey (Jacobson) Hemmingson. He grew up on the farm east of Wakonda. He attended Wakonda High School and graduated in 1975 and went to Dakota State College for one year before returning to the family farm. Mike met his wife Carol Hasenbank and they were united in marriage on September 30, 1978. They were married for 45 years. In those years they raised their three children, Rebecca, Ryan and Derek.
Mike loved spending time with his family and most importantly his grandchildren Brody, Lanie, Kellen, Madi and Hunter. Mike also enjoyed farming, going to town for coffee, visiting with anyone he met and cheering on the Vikings.
Mike is survived by his wife Carol, children Rebecca (Travis) VanBeek of Viborg, SD; Ryan Hemmingson of Wakonda, SD; Derek (Tara) Morris of Letcher, SD; five grandchildren Brody and Lanie VanBeek, Kellen Tracy and Madilyn and Hunter Morris. He is also survived by his sister Zoe Ann (Laddie) Kozak of Estherville, IA; in-laws Vern and Kathy Hasenbank of Vermillion, SD; sisters-in-law Barb Jacobson and Linda (Todd) Moe of Vermillion, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
He is proceeded in death by his parents and brother-in-law John Jacobson.
