Obituary of Opal Vivian Johnson
Opal was born on July 8, 1914, in Olivet, SD, to William and Cora Mae Wintersteen. The youngest of 10 children, Opal often spoke of her love for her family and her enjoyment in being spoiled as the youngest. Opal graduated from Olivet High School in 1934. She received a diamond engagement ring that same day from Elmer M. (Swede) Johnson. On September 27, 1934, Elmer and Opal eloped to Mitchell, SD, and were married at the Corn Palace.
Opal and Elmer had 3 children, Larye Johnson, Sarah (Sally) Guthmiller, and Donna Mae Zeeb. Opal was a lifetime member of the Olivet United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, led youth groups, and served as a Trustee. She was also a lifetime member of the Women’s Society. Opal cherished Olivet and was very sharing of her talents and time. She loved cooking, sewing, embroidery, quilting, and visiting with friends and family.
Opal was the center piece of the entire family and was loved deeply by all. Her love for our Heavenly Father and her kindness and friendliness reflected the beauty of her heart and soul.
